Towards the middle of the 20th century, the difficult terrain between Montreal and Chicoutimi was proving to be a significant challenge for steam locomotives hauling heavy loads of paper and bauxite ore. Eager to solve this problem, researchers turned to the latest technology, a new diesel engine design that promised more power and greater efficiency. Success was found in the all-new FA-1 diesel-electric locomotive, and the Canadian railway changed forever.
