Starting in the past, our odyssey through the 170-year history of Austrian rail has illustrated the important role the country has played in the development of the railway. As the sixth and final 20 euro silver coin in the series shows, it will continue to do so in the future.
As high-speed rail networks continue to extend around Europe, Railjet is Austria’s very own contribution. Designed to offer passengers an entirely new transport experience in speed, comfort, design and service, the number of Railjet network connections was doubled in 2009 and will continue do so in years to come. The coin’s obverse shows the state-of-the-art express train speeding out of a tunnel beneath overhead cables and above “Republic of Austria” and the year of issue (2009). The reverse provides a view of a freight yard containing numerous freight cars and containers. In the foreground stands an electric shunting type 1063 engine.

The Railjet is a high-speed train of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), which was introduced with the timetable change of 2008-2009 and operates at speeds of up to 230 km/h (143 mph). The railjet is the premier service of the ÖBB and operates both domestically within Austria and on international services to adjacent countries.

For more than 125 years the electric railway has been providing the most efficient and environmentally friendly means of transport in Austria. The fifth 20 euro silver coin in our Austrian Railways series pays fitting tribute to the Arlberg Railway, which played a pioneering role in making that electrification happen.
In 1882, Emperor Franz Joseph issued the licence for the first permanent electric railway, which ferried excursionists from Mödling outside Vienna to the Brühl valley. By the end of the 19th century a number of local lines and tramways had converted to electric power. The excellent performance of electric engines on steep inclines led to the conversion of the Arlberg Railway in the west of the country to electric power in the 1920s and to the development of suitable locomotives, such as the type 1189. Nicknamed the “Crocodile” due to its green colour and unusual appearance, the 1189 features on the coin’s obverse hard at work on the line, which is considered a masterpiece of Austrian railway engineering. The coin’s reverse shows a train crossing the Trisanna bridge next to Wiesberg castle, one of the Arlberg Railway’s most beautiful sections.

Now Austria’s busiest line, the West Railway connects Vienna to Linz and Salzburg. Built in the 1850s and originally named after one of its first and most celebrated passengers, the Empress Elisabeth Railway is the noble fourth 20 euro silver coin in our historic Austrian Railways series.
The line’s proximity to the spectacular Salzkammergut meant that it was much used by the Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife to travel to their summer residence in Bad Ischl. At their disposal for this purpose were special court trains that were pulled by the type 306 locomotive shown crossing an iron railway bridge in superb detail on the coin’s obverse.  The 306 had a top speed of 100 kilometres per hour and was very economical fuel-wise, but it was not strong enough to pull the long, heavy express trains needed to satisfy the demands of the expanding passenger market. The coin’s reverse shows such a train arriving at the original West Station alongside a statue of the Empress Elizabeth, better known as Sisi.

The quarter century of optimism, peace and comfort in Europe before the outbreak of the First World War, the Belle Époque was the period when Vienna was at the forefront of world culture. Also the heyday of the age of steam, it is the elegant third 20 euro silver coin in our Austrian Railways series.
Not only did they revolutionise industry and commerce, the railways brought freedom and mobility to a broad sector of society by making travel fast and affordable.  The growth in passenger traffic led to the construction of magnificent railway stations in all of Europe’s great cities and Vienna was no exception. The jewel in Vienna’s transport crown was the North Station, the imposing interior of which features on the coin’s reverse, where an elegant society lady awaits passengers disembarking a train. Connecting landlocked Vienna to the port of Trieste, the Imperial-Royal South Railway was vital to the Habsburg Empire for both trade and tourism. The superb second 20 euro silver coin in our Austrian Railways series charting the history of rail in Austria commemorates the 150th anniversary of the line’s completion in 1857.
A major feat of engineering, not least due to the obstacle represented by the Alps, work on the railway began following an imperial edict in 1841. One of the numerous viaducts bridging the mountain valleys is shown on the coin’s obverse behind the Steinbrück, the locomotive specially built for the railway in 1848 and still preserved as a museum piece today. The reverse depicts the railway station in the harbour of the Adriatic port of Trieste, with a type 17c 372 steam locomotive emerging from its entrance. The Imperial-Royal South Railway was immensely popular with the Viennese and this scene, taken from a watercolour of the time, shows exactly why.

Spanning from the advent of the steam train to the present-day high-speed rail network, Austrian Railways is an enlightening 20 euro silver six-coin series charting the history of rail in Austria. A must for all coin collectors, train buffs and history enthusiasts, the fascinating journey appropriately begins with Emperor Ferdinand’s North Railway, Austria’s first ever line.
Constructed primarily to connect the coal mines of Bohemia and Moravia to Vienna, the imperial capital, the North Railway was commenced in 1836 with the blessing of Emperor Ferdinand. The line’s inaugural 24-minute run took place on 19 November 1837 when the Austria, a locomotive built in England, managed to pull eight carriages containing 164 guests to a maximum speed of 33 kilometres per hour. The momentous occasion is depicted in a scene from a charming 19th-century etching on the coin’s reverse, which shows the train crossing the Danube, while the august engine and its three different classes of carriage are depicted in painstaking detail on the obverse.

Considered the world’s first true mountain railway, the Semmering Railway is still in full use more than 150 years after its construction. The 2004 edition of the Austrian Mint’s unique Silver Niobium series celebrates the anniversary of this technological wonder in fitting style.
Built between 1848 and 1854 by some 20,000 workers and featuring 14 tunnels, 16 viaducts and over 100 stone bridges, over the course of its 41 kilometre length this UNESCO World Heritage Site conquers an altitude difference of 460 metres. The railway’s durability is symbolised by its contrasting past and present locomotives on the coin’s obverse. The coin’s vivid green niobium core mirrors the colour of the landscape through which the railway passes, which is shown on the coin's reverse. Here a steam train is seen crossing a viaduct spanning a deep valley framed by the coin’s outer silver ring bearing the anniversary inscription.

SNCF TGV Réseau
The SNCF TGV Réseau (TGV-R) trains were built by Alstom between 1992 and 1996. These TGV trainsets are based on the earlier TGV Atlantique.

The first Réseau ("Network") sets entered service in 1993. Fifty dual-voltage trainsets were built in 1992-1994, numbered 501-550. A further 40 triple-voltage trainsets, numbered 4501-4540, were built in 1994-1996. The last ten triple voltage units carry the Thalys livery and are known as Thalys PBA (Paris-Brussels-Amsterdam) sets. As well as using standard French voltages of 25 kV AC and 1,500 V DC (also used in the Netherlands), the triple voltage sets can operate under the Belgian and Italian 3 kV DC supplies.

They are formed of two power cars (8,800 kW or 11,800 hp under 25 kV—like the TGV Atlantique) and eight carriages, giving a capacity of 377 seats. They have a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph). They are 200 m (656 ft) long and are 2.904 m (9 ft 6.3 in) wide. The dual-voltage sets weigh 383 t (377 long tons; 422 short tons), and owing to axle-load restrictions in Belgium the triple-voltage sets have a series of modifications, such as the replacement of steel with aluminium and hollow axles, to reduce the weight to under 17 t (16.7 long tons; 18.7 short tons) per axle.

Owing to early complaints of uncomfortable pressure changes when entering tunnels at high speed on the LGV Atlantique, the Réseau sets are pressure-sealed.

"History of Railroads" proof series is dominated by a splendid full-colour design portraying the world's most well known trains. This issue honors the Bernina Express, the Swiss scenic train that serves cities including Lugano, St. Moritz, Chur to Tirano through a landscape from ice-age glaciers to palm trees. Official legal tender of Liberia, each coin is an extremely exclusive limited edition.
The coin is dominated by a splendid full and vivid colour design portraying a Swiss train. The coin’s obverse depicts the Liberian Republic emblem.

In the series "History of Railroads" were issued these coins:

Flying Scotsman,  Trans-Siberian Railway,  Adler,  Sharp Stewart, Royal Hudson,  Bernina Express,  Blue Train,  Mallard,  Flam Line,  MAV-220,  Shinkansen 500,  Union Pacific Big Boy,  Trans Europ Express,  Durango & Silverton, Austrian State Railroad,  China Railways,  TGV Réseau,  Indian Pacific,  PKP Fablok OL 49 Poland.

Bernina Express
The Bernina Express is a train connecting Chur (or Davos) in Switzerland with Poschiavo and Tirano in Italy by crossing the Swiss Alps. For most of its journey, the train also passes along and through the World Heritage Site known as the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes.

The train is operated by the Rhaetian Railway company, mostly for the purpose of sightseeing. It is composed of panoramic coaches in which a piped multi-lingual commentary plays. It is not an express in the sense of being a high-speed train; passengers must pay a small supplement and make a seat reservation. The train is popular with tourists, and connects in Tirano with the Post Bus service via Lake Como in Italy to Lugano in Switzerland.

The Albula line and the Bernina line on the Bernina Express route were jointly declared a World Heritage Site in 2008. The trip on the Bernina Express through this World Heritage Site is a four-hour railway journey across 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels and across the Bernina Pass on the highest point at 2,253 metres in altitude. The entire line is 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) (metre gauge).

The Albula line was constructed between 1898 and 1904, and has been operated by the Rhaetian Railway ever since. The Bernina Railway built the Bernina line between 1908 and 1910, and then operated it independently until the 1940s, when the Rhaetian Railway took it over. The Bernina Express uses gradients of 7% to negotiate the difference in height of about 1800 meters from the summit at Ospizio Bernina to Tirano.

LNER Class A3 4472 Flying Scotsman
The LNER Class A3 Pacific steam locomotive No. 4472 Flying Scotsman (originally No. 1472) was built in 1923 for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at Doncaster Works to a design of H.N. Gresley. It was employed on long-distance express trains on the LNER and its successors, British Railways Eastern and North-Eastern Regions, notably on the 10am London to Edinburgh Flying Scotsman train service after which it was named.

The locomotive is notable for having set two world records for steam traction; becoming the first steam locomotive to be officially authenticated at reaching 100 miles per hour (160.9 km/h) on 30 November 1934, and then setting a record for the longest non-stop run by a steam locomotive when it ran 422 miles (679 km) on 8 August 1989 while in Australia.

Retired from regular service in 1963 after covering 2,076,000 miles (3,341,000 km), Flying Scotsman gained considerable fame in preservation under the ownership of Alan Pegler, William McAlpine, Tony Marchington and finally the National Railway Museum. As well as hauling enthusiast specials in the United Kingdom, the locomotive toured extensively in the United States (from 1969 to 1973) and Australia (from 1988 to 1989). Flying Scotsman has been described as the world's most famous steam locomotive.

Flåm Line
The Flåm Line (Norwegian: Flåmsbana) is a 20.2-kilometer (12.6 mi) long railway line between Myrdal and Flåm in Aurland, Norway. A branch line of the Bergen Line, it runs through the valley of Flåmsdalen and connects the mainline with Sognefjord. The line's elevation difference is 863 meters (2,831 ft); it has ten stations, twenty tunnels and one bridge. The maximum gradient is 5.5 percent (1:18). Because of its steep gradient and picturesque nature, the Flåm Line is now almost exclusively a tourist service and has become the third-most visited tourist attraction in Norway.
Construction of the line started in 1924, with the line opening in 1940. It allowed the district of Sogn access to Bergen and Oslo via the Bergen Line. Electric traction was taken into use in 1944; at first El 9 locomotives were used, and from 1982 El 11. Until 1991, the train connected with a ferry service from Flåm to Gudvangen. In 1992, freight services were terminated, and due to low ticket prices and high operating costs, the line was nearly closed. In 1998, Flåm Utvikling took over marketing and ticket sale for the line, prices were heavily increased and El 17 locomotives were introduced. The trains remain operated by the Norwegian State Railways (NSB), while the line itself is owned and operated by the Norwegian National Rail Administration.

The Indian Pacific is an Australian passenger rail service that operates between Sydney, on the Pacific Ocean, and Perth, on the Indian Ocean. It is one of the few truly transcontinental trains in the world. The train first ran in February 1970 after the completion of gauge conversion projects in South and Western Australia.

The train's route includes the world's longest straight stretch of railway track, a 478-kilometre (297 mi) stretch of the Trans-Australian Railway over the Nullarbor Plain. In 1983 the service was diverted to serve Adelaide.

The service was originally operated jointly by the New South Wales Government Railways, South Australian Railways, Commonwealth Railways and Western Australian Government Railways, until February 1993 when Australian National took full ownership. In October 1997 the Indian Pacific was sold to Great Southern Rail.

A one-way trip originally took 75 hours, but with line and efficiency improvements it now takes 65 hours. The train currently has four classes, branded as Platinum, Gold Service and Red Service Sleeper and Red Service Daynighter and also a Motorail service to convey passengers' motor vehicles.
