The Royal Mint have announced (6th February 2015) the issue of four new coins which mark the 50th year of the death of World War II Statesman Sir Winston Churchill who passed away on the 24th January 1965, aged 90. Sir Winston is the only statesman to have been honored on a British coin on more than one occasion. On the day of his funeral in 1965, Britain was joined by nations across the world to mourn the death of Churchill, and in fitting tribute to this revered statesman, The Royal Mint marked his passing by striking a memorial coin in his honor. Now, half a century on, the anniversary of his death is remembered with the issue of limited edition gold and silver kilo and five-ounce coins capturing the instantly recognizable figure of the great man.

Sculptor Etienne Millner has taken his inspiration from Yousaf Karsh’s widely-recognised 1941 photographic portrait of Churchill to create the design featured on the kilo and the five-ounce coins. The Churchill coin is his first commission for The Royal Mint. A smaller silver coin with a denomination of £20 and purchased at face value, also includes this exquisite depiction. The coin bears the current portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse by Ian Rank-Broadley and soon to be replaced next month with a fifth definitive portrait.

The coins are to be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity with the silver five-ounce coin having a limited presentation of 650, the gold five-ounce coin having a limited presentation of 50 pieces.
