Great Britain 20 Pounds Silver Coin 2015 Sir Winston Churchill

The coin honors Sir Winston Churchill on the 50th anniversary of his death. Churchill had served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He is regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th century, won the Nobel Prize for Literature, and was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States.

In addition to this latest coin, the Royal Mint has previously issued £5 coins honoring Churchill across cupro-nickel, silver, gold, platinum and piedfort versions.

The reverse design of the new £20 coin by sculptor Etienne Millner was inspired by a famous photograph of Churchill taken by Yousuf Karsh in 1941, which appeared on the cover of Life magazine. The inscription “CHURCHILL” appears below.

The obverse design of the coin features the familiar portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. This portrait is scheduled to be retired this year. The inscriptions include the “2015” date and the face value of “20 POUNDS”.

Each coin is struck in .999 fine silver with a brilliant uncirculated finish. The weight is 15.71 grams and the diameter is 27.00 mm. A maximum mintage of 200,000 pieces has been established. The coins are priced at their face value of £20 with an ordering limit of ten per household imposed.
